Exploring the Gippsland Lakes in 1882
Paynesville Maritime Museum

This booklet was published in Sale around 1882 for the Lakes Navigation Company who owned three steamers based at the Port of Sale.

Designed to entice the discerning traveller, 'The Tourist's and Sportsman's Guide to the Gippsland Lakes' presents a vivid snapshot of all the main ports of call: Sale, Bairnsdale, Paynesville, Metung, Lakes Entrance and Bruthen. It provides an accurate account of the developing towns and an understanding of life at the time.

As original copies of the booklet are rare, this facsimile has been published in response to the growing interest in the maritime history of the region.

This publication is for fund raising purposes and is available at a cost of $15.00. All proceeds will go towards the development of a maritime museum at Paynesville.

East Gippsland Historical Society has a wide range of books in stock covering people, places, gold mining, farming and events in East Gippsland dating back to early settlement. These publications are most helpful for research or learning more about family history and understanding the development of the area.

Call in and inspect the range of publications available and speak to one of our members on duty for friendly and helpful advice about selection. If you live out of the area, we would be pleased to provide assistance by telephone or email.
